Who Is She...

Jolisa Janell is a national gospel recording artist, songwriter, recitalist, and vocal coach who grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child, she began singing at her father’s church on the praise and worship team.  It was there that she realized her passion for singing. Most of her foundational training consisted of singing in school ensembles and performing lead solo roles in high school and in college. Shortly after graduating from Dillard University with her BA, she attended Louisiana State University, where she received both her Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Vocal Performance.

 

As a recording artist, she has completed several music projects, including her 2012 single and music video “The Unexpected”, which aired on WOBOK 1230 radio station in New Orleans. In 2013, she released her first full album entitled “You Said It” and thereafter her 2016 and 2017 

singles “I Choose” and “Faithful”. She continues to travel the nation gracing the stage with her former projects and upcoming releases. 

 

As a master recitalist, Jolisa Janell has performed songs by bel canto composers, arias from the greatest operas, humorous art songs, musical theatre pieces and much more.  Additionally, her Doctoral lecture recital was on Song Cycles by Black Women Composers:  A Journey into the Life and Music of Margaret Bonds and Jacqueline B. Hairston.  Other major performances include the 2019 premiere of William Montgomery’s Freedom Train where she was the lead soprano vocalist, her role as Zerlina in Don Giovanni during her Spring 2017 music seminar class at 

Louisiana State University, as well as her roles as Despina in Cosi fan Tutti and Pamina in The Magic Flute for scenes in Dillard University’s “Opera under the Stars.”  

 

Jolisa Janell is a sought-after vocal coach and expert in vocal training. She teaches students both great and small and of all ages. Her teaching background includes Brownfields Elementary, Thrive Academy, Jehovah-Jireh Christian Academy, Sounds Principles Music Academy, Ellis 

Marsalis Center for Music, and Dillard University.  Currently, she continues to conduct private vocal coaching lessons, as well as host music tours throughout the United States.
